How Childhood Trips to Stockholm Inspired a Move to the City

If you’re familiar with Swedes you know that traditionally we are humble and usually don’t brag. But we’re going to step out of our comfort zone a little bit to share why we believe we live and work in the best city in the world - Stockholm, Sweden. Here’s why our Brand and Marketing Art Director Lisa Ulfves loves Stockholm.

Growing up in Northern Sweden, our family holidays often took place in Stockholm. It was convenient for my parents because it was only an hour flight and the city had everything a kid wanted -  a hotel (yes, that was the high point for me), going to Skansen and Gröna Lund, visiting one of the museums, walking in Gamla Stan or taking the subway (very exotic!) And just the feeling of being in a BIG CITY!

When I became a teenager, my friends and I often jumped on the nine hour bus ride to spend a weekend in Stockholm. I loved going to record stores and to secondhand stores. Södermalm quickly became one of my favorite neighborhoods with all the cafes and “alternative” people our age.

I eventually moved to Uppsala to study art history and museology and would often visit my friends in Stockholm - the city with more exciting nightlife and  clubs. The 40-minute commuter train was convenient, but still, Stockholm felt like another world.

Eleven years ago, I received a job offer to work in the city I always dreamed of living in. And I was even able to move into my dream neighborhood - Södermalm! Now I’m working in the city, a block away from my childhood hotel visits and it still feels surreal. Yes, the romantic shine has worn off a bit, and now I prefer to escape the city for the beautiful Stockholm archipelago. But still, there is nowhere else in the world I would rather live.
